It's not just about carrying your stuff. The right tote, clutch or hobo can transform an outfit, while a misguided choice only detracts from fabulous attire.
Old-school rules
Like sunglasses, totes have been expanding to gargantuan proportions but sporting an oversized tote makes anyone under six feet resemble a bag lady. The proportion is wrong. If you insist on going super-sized, turn your bag into a statement and team it with no-frills clothes. Totes and satchels work best with voluminous clothes such as maxi dresses and flares, while little sundresses, minis and evening gowns require dainty clutches.

Spencer & Rutherford has retro-style embroidered purses ($256). Alternatively, go metallic: Zu has silver clutches for $50, while Miijo's silver and caramel ones cost $299. If you're keen on animal skin, try The Red Queen's glorious lizard-skin Lucertola clutch, lined with red suede ($450).
All in the details
To play up subdued attire, look for bags with eye-catching details such as pleats, buckles and studs. Strandbags has studded white satchels for $90 and navy satchels with tassels for $80. Ebony Eve's totes come in bold bronzes ($220), while Dotti has cute hobos with rope handles ($40). Black is always the safest bet when co-ordinating bags and outfits. If your wardrobe is an explosion of rainbow, go for something neutral in beige, bone or light tan. Daytime totes crafted from straw can resemble picnic baskets. Don't be put off. Coloured accessories
Accessorising is now about contrasts; it's worth experimenting with unusual combinations. Taupe shoes look fabulous with a vivid scarlet bag, while navy shoes are wondrous with a pale apple-green bag. Team an olive clutch with fuchsia footwear or a deep purple hobo with yellow shoes.
Yellow
A quick word on the season's essential hue: yellow. Wearing various shades of one colour is a prevailing trend on international catwalks. If you're going top-to-toe, choose a smallish bag. Oversized yellow totes are a tad full-on. Must-have bags include Chloe's dainty handbags in buttercup yellow.
Maintenance
Protect leather and suede bags with a stain guard to seal the material. To keep leather in tiptop shape, store handbags in a breathable dust bag in a dry place.
